Amazon

When we flew into Iquitos we were met by the wonderful guide of Expolorama Lodge. We visited all three of their sites, each about 25 miles further down the Amazon than the next. The further away from the city, the more wildlife present.

Although the first two nights were spent with air conditioning and relative luxury, I would thoroughly recommend staying in the Lodges with no power. You will see more and feel much more part of the jungle.

With now electricity, at night the walkways are light by kerosene (paraffin) lamps. It creates a wonderful rustic feel to the place and is to pretty.

The canopy walkway reaches 118ft into the judge tree tops. Originally constructed for research, a lucky few are able to walk high above the jungle to where many of the creatures live. We saw several birds for the first time and they were not too concerned about seeing humans so high. We even met a man researching ants!

A native Amazon Indian. The Explorama Lodge was established by an anthropologist going to study a tribe 42 years ago. After a while he started to help people travel into the jungle to study the same tribe. Eventually this turned into the Explorama Lodge and it is located next to that original tribe. While many of the traditions have changed they still use blow pipes and hunt almost every day. This man is a flute player and his head-dress carry symbols to show this.

Another photo of the Sloth and baby. This is the tree we released it in when we returned to the Lodge from the days boat trip. I still cannot believe that we were so lucky to see, touch and appreciate the wonder of one of these creatures.
