Groveland Oaks Country Park, MI

The campground has a pretty lake

Overview of park

A beautiful well-organized park. There a lake, sufficient open space, plenty of spacing between sites, concrete pads, well-maintained, and 50A FHU. For 45′ motherships, there are sites where trees or slope will make it impossible, but there are plenty of sites, and only about 50% are impacted.

Site Quality

The campground is organized into bookable and drive-up spaces. Perhaps 30% are bookable. The drive-up sites can be booked for up to a month, and you can renew so some people hog a site for the whole season. I did hear that at the end of the season locals will put down a $100 deposit which holds their place for the next season… Overall though there are a lot of sites that change over regularly, so it’s definitely not dominated by seasonals. The weekends tend to be busy, so we were only able to book on weekdays when we booked about 3-4 weeks before arriving. We could have found drive-up 30A sites if we hadn’t made alternative arrangements.

The concrete pad on all sites is identical. The space limitation and occur for rigs over 40′ because the tires may fit on the pad, but the front may be sticking out, or there are some sites where a tree behind may limited access. But the sites are well thought out, and have sensibly placed firepits and also include a table. As well as having plenty of space, they also are well planted with trees, so it does not feel like a parking lot (one of my pet peeves!).

The sites are all generally very level. Parking access is typically straightforward. Each site also has 1-2 parking spaces for cars.

Facilities

The sites are probably 80% 50A FHU, 20% 30A FHU.

We did not use the facilities, but the building looks new and clean.

There is ample children’s playground equipment, and as the park is relatively new so is the equipment and plenty of space around it. The lake has boat rental, fishing, and a beach area. Nothing felt crowded at all. The RV park is part of the Holly Recreational Area and has much bigger lakes, ample hiking/bike trails, etc.

Location

Despite being close to Detroit, the area is rural and beautiful. There are supermarkets within a few miles, and I liked Fenton 11 miles away as it had something of everything, including essentials such as Starbucks and Home Depot. The I-75 is perhaps 2 miles away, and all roads and freeways are good for RV’s. Double check where the entrance is as Apple Maps gives the address as Grange Hall Rd, but the access is on Dixie Highway.

We really enjoyed Goki Goki Korean restaurant in Fenton, they also have a Korean meat market attached. It’s on the expensive side, but the lunch menu is reasonable. We had the Korean Bento box.

Pet-friendliness

Our dogs enjoyed being here. The roads provide for some variation on walks. There’s plenty of grass between/around sites, so you don’t feel like you are intruding when the dogs do their business at the side of the road. There is a large grass area where we would have let them run if we needed then to expend some energy, but we didn’t as they were active off-site.

Summary

Loved the campground, its a real credit to the city. The area doesn’t really have big attractions that were on our to-do list, but we mainly stayed in the area to visit friends, so we didn’t look. It’s a great place to stay, with FHU and a nice feeling of space. On the list of places we would definitely visit again. Next time we will have to check out the area more and visit Detroit for exciting things to do and see.
