New York City Campgrounds

New York CityIf you want to stay near New York City (NYC) then you have a limited set of choices:

  • Liberty Harbor, New Jersey – it’s a small parking lot, expensive, but very convenient for a couple of days sightseeing. We did not stay here as it only seems suitable for a few short days of sightseeing in NYC.
  • Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson – 1.8 miles from the MTA train that takes you right into Grand Central station, 30A full-hookups. Nice country area.
  • Battle Row, Old Bethpage – 4-5 miles from MTA train that takes you into Penn station. It’s a bit further out, but a normal suburban area with great stores. 50A, water, but a dump station only.
  • Floyd Bennet Field, Brooklyn – it’s a bit of a parking lot, and you need your own transport. No hookups, on-site water, and sewer dump.

When we were transitioning from our Brooklyn apartment to full-time living in the RV, we stayed at all of the above apart from Liberty ($125 for a parking space, seriously?). Battle Row was one of our favorites, other than having to decamp to dump.

Which to choose for your visit? For a 1-3 day visit with frequent all-day trips into the city consider Liberty Harbor. If you don’t want to pay $125 and have a TOAD (a towed vehicle), Floyd Bennet should work. If it’s for longer then Croton Point or Battle Row will be much more enjoyable.
